40mm Dart ammunition uses flechette ammunition to penetrate cover and inflict damage, rather than fragmentation (as with the 40mm Grenade). This allows a grenade launcher (purpose-built or underslung) to function like a shotgun. It is soley for light cover and antipersonnel use.

Battlefield 3

The 40mm Dart Ammo (also known as the M320 BUCK/GP-30 DART) is the first unlockable ammo type for the M320 grenade launcher, filling the role of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's 40mm Shotgun. It often inflicts fatal damage on infantry and flies on a flat trajectory compared to grenades, but is useless against armored vehicles.

Compared to Flechette Ammunition for 12-gauge shotguns, the 40mm variety inflicts much more damage but suffers from the launcher's one round capacity. The spread of the round remains the same.

While 40mm Dart Ammo is largely useless on most assault rifles that can equip the M26 on their underslung rail, it can be useful on the AN-94 and the AEK-971 as they can't mount the M26. In addition, due to dealing twice the damage of 12-gauge flechettes, the effective range of the M320 Buck is significantly longer. It's also worth noting that the M320 retains the same firing sound regardless of the ammunition used, meaning that it can be useful for sneaking up on and assaulting enemies as the sound of an M320 being fired at close range is unlikely to be identified as a threat at close range.

Trivia

  • The M320 DART is incorrectly referred as the M320 BUCK after the Beta with the GP-30 displaying its correct name of GP-30 DART.
