The Kalashnikov Concern AK-12 is a Russian fifth generation 5.45×39mm Kalashnikov rifle which began development in 2011. Originally developed by the IZHMASH arms factory, the AK-12 was designed for the Russian Army's "Ratnik" infantry combat system trials in the early 2010s. The AK-12 uses the traditional gas operated action of earlier Kalashnikov rifles, but with several redesigned components for improved accuracy under various conditions as well as integrated Picatinny rails for modern weapon attachments.
The original prototype, internally known as the AK-200, was a significant design departure from other AK pattern rifles, using a modular design with an ambidextrous charging handle and short-throw fire selector. This prototype failed the Russian Army's trials, who cited reliability and cost concerns. Kalashnikov Concern scrapped the AK-200 design in 2015 and began developing the AK-400 prototype instead, which was overall much closer in design to the AKM. The AK-400 fared well in later military trials, and was selected for adoption by the Russian Army in 2018 with the GRAU index 6P70.
The AK-200 design of the AK-12 appears in Battlefield 4, while the production version appears in Battlefield 2042 as the AK-24. Alternate configurations of the AK-200 design are also portrayed in Battlefield 4 as separate weapons: RPK-12 (light machine gun), AKU-12 (carbine), SVD-12 (designated marksman rifle) and DBV-12 (shotgun).
Battlefield 4[]
The AK-12 is an assault rifle featured in Battlefield 4.
Singleplayer[]
In singleplayer, the AK-12 is used by the Russian Army as its standard assault rifle. It can be found in Baku and Tashgar off of dead Russian soldiers. It comes equipped with a PKA-S, Magnifier, Heavy Barrel and Folding Grip, as well as sporting ERDL Woodland paint.
Multiplayer[]
The AK-12 is the default assault rifle for the Assault class alongside the AN-94, and is equipped with a Kobra optic, Laser Sight and Ergo Grip by default.
It is a fairly balanced weapon, having low-moderate recoil and decent fire rate. The AK-12 has slight tendency to drift left, which is helped by equipping the Compensator attachment, as it makes the recoil profile straighter upwards, at the cost of increased spread per shot. If the player can control the additional recoil, a Heavy Barrel is recommended to improve accuracy. Its lower fire rate of 650 RPM can maintain its controllable recoil but may be a hindrance in extreme close quarters combat, as it can be easily beaten out by some of the faster firing assault rifles and PDWs. The AK-12 unlocks Russian attachments, with US and Chinese attachments only attainable through Battlepacks.
The AK-12, along with the AKU-12, has a unique feature in which using the "burst" fire mode increases its fire rate considerably, to 750 RPM from 650 RPM. This can benefit the player to fire faster at close-medium range, or to tighten shot placement over range.

Trivia[]
Battlefield 4[]
- The AK-12 was one of two assault rifles that appeared in the Battlefield 4 Beta, the other being the SCAR-H.
- During the Beta, 100 kills with the AK-12 awarded the SG553 Mastery Dog Tag.
- The AK-12 originally had 1,000 RPM in its 3-Rounds Burst mode during the Beta, this was reduced to 750 RPM in the final release for balancing reasons.
- The underhand technique is used to cock the weapon from the right side, despite the fact that this AK-12 model is ambidextrous and could have been simply cocked from the left.
- The AK-12 is the only variant of the weapon platform that gets a 500 kill Dog Tag. The AKU, RPK, SVD and DBV do not get one.
Battlefield 2042[]
- Before Update 4.1, AK-24 is capable of firing in semi-automatic mode before being removed.[1] However, a later patch silently re-added it back.
- Carbon Series weapon skin was originally called Russian Diplomat. This was changed in Update 1 (Season 1).[2]
- The original description was "Lives up to all the hype of Russian ARs. Chambered for 5.45x39mm with three fire modes and a standard 30-round magazine.". This was changed in a later update.
- The AK-24 originally was held by a C clamp back in the open beta, this was changed in the full release.
