A 40mm Tear Gas canister is a round for a launcher such as the M79, utilizing the grenade launcher to deploy Tear Gas at a distance from the user.

40mm Tear Gas is a cut gadget in Battlefield Hardline.
It was an ammo type for the M320 and M79. It had a similar effect to the Gas Grenade, but could be fired long distances and presumably a smaller area of effect.
It was in the game's beta build until sometime before January 2015, at which point it was no longer available.
