Cluster Munitions are a form of air-dropped or ground-based explosives that rely on releasing smaller submunitions to inflict damage on targets, commonly in the form of cluster bombs. Dating back to World War II, they were first developed by the Luftwaffe for use in German bombers, most notable during the Battle of Britain. They were subsequently and independently developed by the United States, the Soviet Union, and Italy, and they became the standard for air-dropped munitions from the 1970's to the 1990s.
In May of 2008, a convention was held in Dublin, Ireland where many countries of the world agreed to ban the use of cluster munitions due to their potential risks to civilian life long after conflicts have left a given area. As of February 2022, a total of 123 countries have committed to the goal of the conventions. Notable countries that have not signed the agreement include the United States, Russia, China, Brazil, Argentina, India, Egypt, Iran, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia—many of whom have appeared in the Battlefield franchise in some form.
Battlefield 2042[]
Cluster Mine Layer[]
— In-game description
The Cluster Mine Layer is the third-to-last unlock currently available for the M5C Bolte. After attaining 180 kills and assists with the vehicle and equipping it in the second equipment slot, drivers of the Bolte can periodically deploy cluster bombs behind the vehicle by pressing the Equipment 2 button—similar fashion to the Anti-Tank Mine Layer available by default for the same slot. A few seconds following activation, a number of fragmentation explosions appear behind the armored transport just above its roof-line, doing heavy splash damage to any nearby enemy players. This equipment allows drivers to perform hit-and-run attacks on enemy infantry positions while the gunner can clean up wounded enemies with their weapon station. The Cluster Mine Layer cannot damage other vehicles, but it can do heavy damage to players that are in exposed positions, such as those in civilian vehicles, light transports, and parked transport and scout helicopters. However, the equipment can detonate nearby enemy mines—assuming the driver doesn't trigger them first.
Close Defense System[]
— In-game description
The Close Defense System is the second unlock currently available for the CAV-Brawler. Upon reaching 80 kills, assists, and teammates spawned on the vehicle, players may equip this in the first equipment slot, trading out the middling Smoke Discharger for something that gives the CAV more teeth in close-range fights. Operating in similar fashion to the Cluster Mine Layer for the M5C Bolte, pressing Equipment 1 when driving the Brawler will deploy an encirclement of fragmentation explosives around the vehicle at its roof-line, doing massive damage to nearby infantry caught in the blast and allowing the driver to gain their own kills—aside from running enemies over. This equipment is very effective at clearing enemies surrounding the vehicle, and can act as a panic button in preventing enemies from trying to C5-run the vehicle to destroy it. Just like the Cluster Mine Layer, this equipment can detonate nearby enemy mines, but it cannot damage enemy vehicles directly—it can only damage exposed enemy players in civilian and light vehicles, as well as transport and scout helicopters.
