The DP in real life.
The DP-28 (Russian: Пулемёт Дегтярёвa; Degtyaryova Pulemyot; English: Degtyaryov's Machinegun) was a Soviet light machine gun designed by Vasily Degtyaryov in 1927. Though not very widely used by the Soviet Army, many DP-28 machine guns were used and produced by other countries such as Finland and the People's Republic of China (where it was designated Type-53) who then sold many units to the neighboring North Korea and North Vietnam. The DP-28 fired the 7.62x54mmR cartridge at a rate of fire around 550 rounds per minute from a 47-round pan magazine placed on top of the gun. It was commonly nicknamed the "record player" by the Red Army due to its pan magazine and rotating cover.
Battlefield 1942
The DP is an Assault Rifle in Battlefield 1942 issued to the Red Army Assault kit post patch 1.45v, replacing the BAR 1918.
Assault Rifles in Battlefield 1942 are Assault Rifle, Automatic Rifles or LMGs used by the Assault kit. With a high power round capable of 3-5 shot kill to the torso and two shot kill to the head; but have high recoil and in some cases Damage dropoff to contend to. They perform better at longer ranges and in the crouch and prone position compared to SMGs rate of fire and spread increase cant perform as well at that range. While longer ranges they may fall to Standard Issue Rifles or Sniper Rifles, they can still perform adequate enough to challenge them.
The DP has the highest magazine capacity compared to its Allied and Axis counterparts at 47 rounds, is tied with the StG-44 for the highest rate of fire and has the quickest reload at 3.6 seconds. Additionally, like most assault rifles, it does not have damage drop-off. However, its magazine capacity is balanced out by having the lowest damage per shot at 6.2, making the DP a 4-shot kill to the torso while still being high enough to maintain a 2-shot kill to the head compared to the standard 3 shots to the torso and 2 shots to the head.
When compared to the STG-44; the DP has a higher magazine capacity by 17 rounds and slightly quicker reload time by .2. The STG-44 has better damage at 7 vs 6.2 of the DPs, making it a 3 shot kill compared to the DPs 4 (both kill at two shot to the head). Both guns have an identical rate of fire and recoil patterns. Spread wise, they are identical with the exception of the prone position spread, where the DP is slightly more accurate with a .5 modifier compared to .6 of the STG-44.
