Battlefield 3

"Heavily armored IFV and paratrooper transport plane"

— Battlelog description

The Dropship is a new type of vehicle, that appears in the  End Game expansion pack. It spawns in a similar way to the Gunship on Conquest mode in the Armored Kill DLC; by capturing a base in the center of the map will allow teammates to spawn on it.

The Dropship only appears on Conquest, with the vehicle spawning infrequently as long as the appropriate base is held. Like the gunship, this aircraft can be destroyed in the air by enemy fire. Differences from the Gunship include that the Dropship allows for up to four passenger seats, which players can occupy until they want to jump out of the Dropship or take control of the Infantry Fighting Vehicle that spawns inside the Dropship.

Upon spawning inside the IFV, the cargo doors will open and the vehicle will parachute out. While in the air, the driver has only minimal control over the vehicle's direction, speed and rate of descent, however once the vehicle has touched down, full control is enabled instantaneously.

The Dropship does not circle the map like the gunship, instead it spawns over the base of the team that holds the central flag and starts flying slowly toward the enemy deployment. Once it reaches the out-of-bounds area, all the passengers automatically exit and the dropship explodes.

After few seconds, another dropship will spawn. Another difference from the gunship is the complete lack of armament. However, the dropship is equipped with IR Flares that are automatically deployed when a missile achieves a lock (a set is reloaded every twenty seconds). Players waiting to parachute out the back cannot use their weapons, but can look around and jump.

Trivia

  • The Dropship itself does not have a thermal signature, this makes it much harder to lock on to this vehicle with laser designators. Heat-seeking weapons lock-on to the vehicle as normal.
