Battlefield 1942[]

"The ENGINEER KIT is equipped with a standard issue rifle. The rifle has heavy stopping power but a long reload and limited ammo capacity. The true value of the engineer is his ability to repair vehicles and plant explosives, both landmines and demolition packs. To repair a vehicle, equip yourself with the wrench and press FIRE while near the damaged vehicle. You can also deactivate landmines using your wrench. To detonate the demolition packs after you have laid them out press the ALTERNATE FIRE button to equip the detonator. Press FIRE to detonate. Keep your ears open for teammates who need repairs. They will appear in your MINIMAP as a wrench icon."

The Engineer kit is featured in Battlefield 1942; The Engineer kit mainly focuses on repairing vehicle and to some extent destroying them. Most commonly, engineers are distinguished by their large backpacks.

Combat against Infantry[]

Engineers are issued Standard Issue Rifles: for Pacific maps, these are semi-automatic rifles, but for all other maps, they are bolt-action rifles, identical to the scout rifles without the long-range scope.

Bolt-action rifles have an extremely slow rate of fire but are accurate overall and can kill with one shot to the head and two to the body; users should avoid short range engagements and instead focus on medium- to long-range engagements. Unlike the scout rifles, engineer rifles stay zoomed when the bolt is being pulled.

Semi-Automatic versions fire at a higher rate of fire at the cost of being slightly less accurate than their bolt-action counterparts. In Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, the British Commandos engineer is issued a Shotgun, which excels at close range but suffers at longer ranges.

As with all classes, the kit carries a pistol, mainly as a backup weapon for close range. It should be used if the user is out of ammo, caught by enemies mid-reload or to finish off damaged opponents. They are also equipped with a knife, should the pistol run out of ammo. Though the knife has a very short effective range, it has the capability to kill enemy infantry in two hits to the chest and arms and one hit to the head. In The Road to Rome, the Engineers are issued the Bayonet, which replaces the Knife. When the bayonet is selected, the weapon can be fired normally, though the zoom function is replaced by a bayonet charge.

Instead of hand grenades, engineers are issued TNT#Battlefield 1942#ExpPacks. These can be used in a variety of ways, ranging from setting a trap for enemy players at bases and so on. In Secret Weapons of WWII the German Elite Forces kit is given rifle grenades instead of ExpPacks, which function similarly to hand grenades, and can be used to clear out large groups of infantry.

Combat against Vehicles[]

The aforementioned ExpPacks are also effective against vehicles. However, it should be noted that unlike later installments, ExpPacks do not stick to surfaces, and will fall off a vehicle if it is moving.

The true effectiveness of the anti-vehicle abilities of the engineer kit is in its landmines, where one mine is sufficient to destroy any vehicle, from aircraft to heavy tanks.

Finally, the engineer carries a wrench that can repair friendly vehicles or deactivate landmines. Other friendly vehicles that need repairs may use the radio command to call for repairs, which will then show up as a flashing icon on the engineer's minimap.
