The FG42 (German: Fallschirmjägergewehr 1942; English: Paratrooper rifle 1942) was a German selective-fire machine gun designed by Louis Stange in 1942. It was considered a marvel in World War II weaponry for combining characteristics and firepower of a light machine gun with the size and weight of a standard rifle. However, it was very expensive and only issued in very limited numbers to Fallschirmjäger airborne infantry and elite forces.

It fired a 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge in a 10- or 20-round magazine at 750-900 rounds per minute and had an effective range of 500 meters. All models featured standard iron sights, but it could also equip an optional ZFG42 or ZF4 scopes.

In Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII, the Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 is issued to the SS Assault kit. It has a high rate of fire, moderate accuracy, high damage and medium recoil. It uses a 30-round magazine. According to the game files, it uses the same projectile material as the 44, hence being identical in stats.

Overview 1942 BFV

The Fallschirmjägergewehr 1942 (English: Paratrooper rifle 1942, colloquially referred to as the FG42) was a purpose-designed automatic rifle intended for use by the German Fallschirmjäger units of the Luftwaffe. It is semi-bullpup in configuration, with a side-loaded magazine, and fired the full-sized 7.92mm Mauser cartridge at 750-900 rounds per minute. It was a response to the early failures of German paratroops in Crete and other places, who had to have their weapons dropped in separate crates and had only sidearms to defend themselves before they could retrieve the crates.

While a novel design, the weapon had numerous drawbacks. It was expensive to produce, the side-mounted magazines tended to unbalance the weapon and resulted in a hard pull, which was exaggerated by the power of the cartridge it fired.
