The .45-70 Government cartridge was introduced in 1873 for use in the Springfield Model 1873, a "trapdoor" breech-loading rifle created shortly after the American Civil War. The .45-inch diameter bullet is propelled by 70 grains of black powder. Various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces used the round in the M1873 and the later Model 1884 until the development of the Springfield M1892.

Falling into disuse by the mid-20th century, the cartridge found a resurgence with sport shooters. Interest in .45-70 continues to the present day, with the Marlin 1895 Dark Series lever-action rifle featuring modern accessory rails, black matte finish, and threaded barrel.
