Following Kovic's report to Garrison of Chang Wei and Cutler's involvement at the North Korean border and their intention to assassinate Jin Jié in order to implicate the United States as being responsible in the process, Garrison relayed the report to the Secretary of Defense. Garrison then requested an extraction of Kovic and Hannah, only for Gauntlet to deny the request. His reasoning was that if Chang were to find out about it, it would be considered as an act of war and that they should wait.
Unable to follow through with Gauntlet's order, Garrison deployed Tombstone to extract them from the Zhi You Towers in Shanghai after Kovic told him of their location.
Trivia[]
The novel states that the Secretary of Defense is an old friend of Garrison.
