The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) (Persian: نیروی هوایی ارتش جمهوری اسلامی ایران) is the aviation branch of the Iranian Army. The present Air Force came into being in 1979 when the former Imperial Iranian Air Force was renamed after the Iranian revolution. The Air Force played a significant role in the long Iran–Iraq War, due to which Iran has the second highest number of aces in the world (next to Israel), despite being crippled by purges in its early stages after the revolution and then being relegated to defensive duties. The IRIAF operates many aircraft, many of which are American-made, such as the famous F-14 Tomcat jet fighter, F-4 Phantoms, and the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter. Aside from American aircrafts purchased prior to the Iranian revolution (which led to the deterioration of foreign relations), the Iranian Air Force also has its own set of domestic-made aircraft mostly based on previous US aircrafts (such as HESA Saeghe which is based on Northrop F-5), and some Soviet made aircrafts which they bought from Russia in the 90's, in addition to a number of former Iraqi jets that fled to Iran during the 1990 Gulf War, such as the MiG-29 and Su-25.
Battlefield 3[]
In the Battlefield 3 campaign, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force is seen in the mission Going Hunting when the player is piloting an F/A-18F Super Hornet and are taking part in a targeted strike against Faruk Al-Bashir at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. The IRIAF uses the Russian-made Su-35 Flanker multirole fighter as their main fighter jet.
In Battlefield 3: The Russian, it was mentioned that Faruk Al-Bashir was a former General of the IRIAF. Despite this fact, he wears a uniform similar to those worn by the Iranian Navy officers in game.
VEHICLES USED[]
