The M4 is an American 5.56x45mm carbine developed by Colt in the 1980s. It is a shortened version of the burst-fire M16A2 rifle with a 14.5″ barrel and a removable carry handle. The M4 was developed at the request of the United States military for a replacement of the Vietnam era CAR-15 weapons family, and was officially adopted by the armed forces in 1992. The M4 would go on to replace the M16 itself as the standard infantry rifle in most branches of US Military, with only the United States Marine Corps retaining the M16 as its standard rifle until the late 2010s. The M4 has also seen wide export and use by many military forces worldwide.[1]

The M4A1 is a fully-automatic variant of the M4 intended for use by Special Forces units; the US Army would later choose to upgrade all of its infantry M4s to the M4A1 following the War in Afghanistan.[2] The Colt Model 933, also known as the M4 Commando RO933, is a fully automatic carbine similar to the M4A1 but with an even shorter 10.4″ barrel. The M4 Commando series saw little use with military forces but became popular with various US Law Enforcement groups, particularly SWAT units.

The M4 and its variants appear in seven games in the Battlefield series. The fully automatic M4A1 appears in the most entries, simply named the M4 in Battlefield 2 and Modern Combat. The burst-fire M4 only appears in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. The RO933, as well as a variant modified to fire .300 Blackout rounds, appears in Battlefield Hardline.
