The Main Battle Tank and Light Anti-tank Weapon (MBT LAW) is an Anglo-Swedish short-range fire-and-forget anti-tank missile launcher.
Development of the MBT LAW began in 2002 when the British Ministry of Defense issued a contract for the replacement of the LAW 80 disposable anti-tank system. The Swedish also ordered the MBT LAW in 2005 through the UK MoD's procurement agency as well as several other nations. Deliveries of the system began in 2009. The MBT LAW was designed and developed by SAAB Bofors Dynamics in Sweden.
Battlefield 4
— Battlelog description
The MBT LAW is a self-guided rocket launcher for the Engineer kit in Battlefield 4.
Compared to other launchers, the MBT-LAW is the easiest to use, but inflicts the lowest damage to vehicles for balancing purposes. It does 21 damage to tanks, MAAs and IFVs, 28~42 to lighter land vehicles, 5~14 to attack boats, 21 to RHIB boats and 100 to bikes and jetskis.
Unlike most lock-on launchers like the FIM-92 Stinger and FGM-148 Javelin, the MBT-LAW has no lock-on display unless laser designated, and hence can be dumb-fired without a target, like the RPG-7V2. The rocket will track any vehicle near its path, and otherwise flies level. Upon detecting a nearby vehicle, it will adjust its path to hit center mass from an elevated angle; this may cause the missile to impact against cover, such as ceilings if the vehicle is inside a small building, the missile may hit the wrong target as it may hit the other vehicles or enplaced weapon nearby. Its possible for the enemy vehicle to hide behind an unoccupied vehicle and the missile from MBT LAW will hit the wrong target. While in the open area, the MBT LAW is still capable of hitting the vehicle that hide behind small cover, as the missile will automatically target the top of the vehicle. Alternatively, the MBT LAW can be used indirectly, as long as the target is not blocked by tall cover ot other things that the missile may lock on to, this can be used to the players' advantage as they do not have to expose themselves while firing. If you try to hit fast moving targets at close, sometimes hip-firing is a better idea as the optics will significantly cut down the field of view, making the tracking difficult.
Its missiles will also home onto enemy helicopters if they get close enough, making this launcher useful to those who want the capability to attack both land and airborne targets. It generally takes 2-3 rockets to bring down a helicopter. One hit can cause mobility damage or even mobility kill.
Vehicle warning systems will not detect a free-flying MBT LAW until the vehicle is within the small tracking radius, giving little opportunity to avoid initial attacks. Sometimes, the warning will only activate after the missile impacts.
Currently the IR Smoke and Thermal Camo will not affect the performance of MBT LAW, since it does noticably less damage, the MBT LAW rarely score critical hits and disable heavy vehicles. The MBT LAW can be locked via laser designator, it only does slightly higher damage with locking, unlike the Javelin and SRAW will receive a large damage boost; if the user can hit the target, don't bother use the laser designation, it is only useful if the target is completely out of sight. The MBT LAW also has one plus side, it will ignore the Active Protection, unlike other missiles and rockets in the game.
The MBT LAW has another advantage, it is highly accurate and have much less drop over distances. Thus its possible to use MBT LAW to snipe infantry from afar, it can even be used as counter-sniper weapon due to its very fast travel speed. Direct hit from MBT LAW will always kill a foot soldier.
Trivia
- After 2015 spring patch, the MBT LAW has better tracking range and will now kill bikes in one hit.
