MIM23 real life

MIM-23 Hawk in real life

The MIM-23 Hawk is an American medium range surface-to-air missile (SAM), adopted by United States Army in 1959. It saw widespread use during Cold War, Iran-Iraq War, Gulf War and other conflicts around the world, being operated by the United States, Iran and several other countries.

The MIM-23 Hawk, simply called SAM, appears in Battlefield 3, both in singleplayer and multiplayer portions of the game.

Battlefield 3[]

The MIM-23 Hawk appears both in campaing and multiplayer sections of Battlefield 3. It is always either AI-controlled or static - never usable by the player.

Singleplayer[]

MIM-23 launcher serves as a mission objective in Going Hunting level. Three Hawk SAMs are protecting the Mehrabad airport and have to be destroyed by Hawkins using HARM guided missiles.

Multiplayer[]

MIM-23 Hawk appears on various multiplayer maps as a static prop, most notorably on Kharg Island, Noshahr Canals, Death Valley and Operation Métro. Despite being unusable by the player, it can be actually "used" to kill enemies, as shooting the missiles will result in a huge explosion that will damage everybody standing nearby.

An actual working MIM-23 appears exclusively on Operation Métro in Rush gamemode. In the first sector (park), one launcher will fire a missile in regular intervals, shooting down French dropship planes in the background. As both M-COMs are destroyed, the launcher will automatically explode.
