In France, the National Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie nationale) is a branch of the French armed forces, in charge of public safety, with police duties among the civilian population. It also contains a military force force and a special forces component. It is mandated to fulfill national security duties and duties in support of its parent ministry.

Singleplayer
In Battlefield 3, the Gendarmerie appears as a enemy in Comrades. They are poorly armored and can be killed in about two to five shots. They are replaced by the GIGN at the end of the level.
Co-op
The Gendarmerie appears in Drop 'Em Like Liquid at the beginning of the level. They can't be killed and are just for scenery. They carry UMP-45's. They also are seen surrounding the Stock Exchange with GIGN Soldiers during The Eleventh Hour, where they are scripted to throw smoke grenades , presumably to assist in the assault.
