The Sterling submachine gun is British submachine gun. Intended to be a replacement for the Sten submachine gun, it was designed by William Patchett with tests taking place between 1944 and 1945. The prototype that first saw combat by British Airborne troops was designated the Patchett Machine Carbine Mk 1. Despite this, the Sterling did not replace the Sten until 1953 and remained in use until 1994, itself being replaced by the L85A1.
