The People's Liberation Army (Chinese: 中国人民解放军) is the main military force of China. Founded in 1921 under the control of Communist Party of China, they participated in the Chinese Civil War, extended over certain periods between 1927 to 1950. As the PLA was victorious over the Republic of China's forces, the Communist Party of China took control officially in 1949 and created the People's Republic of China. From there on out, the PLA became the main military force of the PRC. Presently, it consists of 5 branches: the Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, the Second Artillery Corps and the Armed Police. It currently has the largest number of active personnel in the world at 2.3 million soldiers.

Battlefield 4

Singleplayer

In Battlefield 4, the People's Liberation Army forms the main antagonist faction in the singleplayer campaign. The PLA appear in all the levels with the exception of Baku and Tashgar, where the Russian Ground Forces are instead present.

The PLA's first appearance is in Shanghai, where Tombstone Squad is sent to extract Kovic and two other VIPs. The PLA is fought whilst extracting the VIPs. After the VIPs are extracted from Shanghai by helicopter, Tombstone is left behind on the ground, forced to escape Shanghai by foot. Tomestone fights PLA forces through alleyways and streets, including a few Type 99 tanks. During the cutscene where Tombstone is aiding Chinese refugees, Chang detonates an EMP blast in Shanghai, crippling the electronics of the US fleet nearby, including Tombstone's home ship, the USS Valkyrie.

The Second mission is South China Sea, where the PLAN fatally damage and board the USS Titan before Tombstone Squad, presuming to find info on the US fleet movement or the voyage recorder. However Tombstone manages to secure the Voyage recorder and comes across PLA forces what previously boarded the ship. Thus a firefight ensues under the deck and then the ships splits in two, beginning to sink. Tombstone manages to get to the top of the ship from jumping from the one side of the ship to the other, and fight the PLA on the flight deck before escaping via a DV-15 Interceptor. The PLA then besiege the Valkyrie, but the Marines onboard repel them, with the help of Tombstone.

The third level is Singapore, in which Tombstone and the USMC launches an amphibious assault in Singapore to help blow up Changi airport that houses PLAAF attack jets threatening to wipe out the remnants of the US fleet. The USMC forces immediately come under heavy fire as they land. Despite sustaining heavy casualties, they are able to push through, with the assistance of M1A2 Abrams armour support, clearing the PLA forces throughout the beach. However, most of the Marines are left behind, as only Tombstone and a single M1 Abrams continue through to the streets. After the tank crew suffer a shock from an airburst above the hatch, Tombstone commandeers the tank. Two friendly tanks later arrive to aid Tombstone in fighting PLA armor, but both are destroyed in fighting, leaving Tombstone to fight alone. They abandon the tank near the airport as they must advance on foot. Tombstone then infiltrates the airport, defeating fierce PLA resistance, and signal Garrison to launch missiles at the airfield. The mission succeeds, but Recker and Irish are captured by PLA forces, and sent to a military prison in Kunlun Mountains.

In the Kunlun prison, The PLA will appear halfway through the level to assist the MPS prison guards in stopping an escape by Dima, Recker and Irish. After reaching the outside, Tombstone then proceeds to fight their way to a cable car and escape. A Z-11W arrives and shoots down the cable car, killing Dima.

The Final level is Suez, where the PLA have gotten to Suez, Eygpt and taken over the northern part of the canal. Tombstone arrive when the PLA boards the USS Valkyrie. Tombstone then fights its way through the ship to find Garrison. Jin Jie reveals himself to a squad of PLA soldiers that breach the medical bay that he, Tombstone and Garrison are in. The soldiers cease hostilities, and start spreading the word that Jin Jie is alive. Admiral Chang attempts to destroy the USS Valkyrie in order to "bury the truth". Tombstone then proceeds to use C4 and a RHIB boat to destroy Chang's warship. Depending on the players choice, the war between Russia, China and the US ends or the war continues between China and the US.

Weapons Used

For the most part, they wear uniforms identical, or very similar, to those in the multiplayer, with weapons and equipment corresponding to each, which are predominantly Chinese in origin. The soldiers who look similar to the assault wield QBZ-95 assault rifles. Soldiers dressed as the engineer wield the JS2 and Hawk 12G. There is another skin which wields a QBZ-95 and a SMAW, dressing similar to the Russian engineer in multiplayer with tiger camouflage. Those soldiers who wield a Type 88 LMG are dressed very similar to the multiplayer support, although with a helmet alike the Russian support, though with the visor down. Snipers use the FY-JS, but unlike the other soldiers, they are dressed very similar to the Russian recon.

Vehicles Used

The Chinese operate a wide variety of vehicles in Battlefield 4, almost all of which are Chinese in origin. Q-5 Fantans are their jet of choice in the singleplayer. Their main battle tank is the Type 99. The ZBD-09 and Type 95 are operated as APCs. On the water, they wield DV-15 and RHIB boats. The ZFB-05 appears as a sort of fast attack vehicle. In terms of helicopters, they operate both the Z-9Z-10W and Z-11W.

Notable Personnel

Multiplayer

In multiplayer, the People's Liberation Army fights against the United States Marine Corps and Russian Ground Force. The PLA fight the USMC on all maps they are present on by default, with the exception of Golmud Railway, Rogue Transmission and Lancang Dam, where they combat the RGF instead.

Due to the choice of factions on a map being up to the server operator in Battlefield 4, the PLA can appear on any map against any other faction, including the PLA itself, if the server owner wishes so (Official DICE servers always use the default system, however).

Maps the PLA appears on by default are as follows.

PLA vs USMC

Image Map
Battlefield 4 Paracel Storm Screenshot 2 Paracel Storm: An archipelago with bridges that connect each island. The map offers a mixture of naval, aerial, and infantry combat. Part way through, a storm will blow its way in.
Hainan Resort Hainan Resort: A resort that's on mostly flat land, right by the sea. Long range engagements will take place all around the hotel but when the fighting reaches the interior of the hotel, it's all close quarters.
Dawnbreaker Dawnbreaker: This city was in conflict all night and the dawn is coming, and will come. Very tight, urban combat that features aerial, vehicular and infantry combat. Close quarters fighting takes hold inside some skyscrapers.
Flood Zone Flood Zone: Rain has partially flooded this city. There are many shacks and ways up onto all sorts of buildings. Urban vehicular combat turns naval combat once the levee breaks.
Mp siege Siege of Shanghai: Tight city streets that will make you fight for every block. Close quarters reign supreme, even with the tanks, helicopters and attack boats you can hop into. The center skyscraper can become a concrete jackhammer with a few well placed shots.
BF4 Dragonpass (CR) Dragon Pass: A muddy valley that's in between rolling hills and mountains. A river in the middle will have you fighting at long range. Aerial vehicles and land vehicles will compete at any range.
BF4 Silkraoad (CR) Silk Road: Long range desert combat allows for just about any type of vehicle combat. All of this combat focuses on a military base that offers close quarters combat.
BF4 AltaiRange (CR) Altai Range: A temperate mountain range that is extreme long range and vehicles own complete supremacy of the map. A weather and radar station up a mountain becomes the main, all close quarters combat center.
BF4 Guilinpeaks (CR) Guilin Peaks: Within these green valleys, close quarters combat is the only way to live. Almost no vehicles appear, except some transport vehicles that make you work as a team.
Nansha Strike Preview Image (NS) Nansha Strike: A man made archipelago and a natural archipelago merge together to form some on island long range combat. Within the buildings, close quarters weapons can make you king. Navy combat rages on out in the ocean and air combat in the skies.
Lost Island Preview Image (NS) Lost Island: Forgotten islands that house a downed plane in the center. It's close quarters in the plane but the rest of the map is long range and vehicular.
Wave Breaker Preview Image (NS) Wave Breaker: A submarine base in a mountain, creates close quarters fighting that can only be interrupted by boat or helicopter that are curious. Outside, long range and vehicular fighting defends the hill.
Operation Mortar Preview Image (NS) Operation Mortar: An island paradise resort, turned war-zone that forces you into long range and vehicular fighting. Inside a hillside fortress, close quarters is the only way to make it through the tunnels alive.
BF4 lumphini (DT) Lumphini Garden: An urban park that is mostly focused on infantry combat. The vehicles on the map function only as light transportation between objectives.
BF4 pearlmarket (DT) Pearl Market: The map is set in an urban district of Hong Kong - featuring infantry-focused combat in narrow streets and on flat rooftops.
BF4 propaganda (DT) Propaganda: The map has a significant focus on infantry combat. Set in Pyongyang during the winter, the city's tight alleyways and clustered buildings make for a chaotic urban environment.
BF4 sunkendragon (DT) Sunken Dragon: The map takes place in a Chinese business area around the Sea Dragon, a floating restaurant that has been sunk by missiles. Both teams have limited heavy arms, with having access to an IFV and Scout helicopter each.
BF4 CO TempleFight-0
(Battlefield 4: Community Operations) The map is set in the Harau Valley of Indonesia, where a chemical warfare research facility is located. With close to medium range engagements, and a variety of vehicle warfare, and a secret Phantom Bow hidden in the middle.
(Battlefield 4: Legacy Operations) Dragon Valley/Battlefield 4: Being a remake of the BF2 Dragon Valley, the map features 8 flags, a cloud layer for immersive dog fights, taller terrain, and reduced foliage and fog. The map also has destructible and repairable bridges. Teamdeath Match mode features the harbor area that has same layout as Noshahr Canals.

Image Map
GOLMUD2 Golmud Railway: A map with a wide range of environs -- open, hilly lands to the south, intersected by the eponymous railway, with clusters of buildings offering mid and closer-range engagement at various points around the map and destructive IED's placed at random points around the map.
Mp damage Lancang Dam: A vaguely U-shaped map, where most of the land concentrated around a road that runs through the map. It offers both naval and land engagements, with a variety of distances and a destroyable dam.
Mp thedish Rogue Transmission: A wide-open map centered around a large radio dish. It offers largely long-range engagements with a wide variety of vehicles, although there are clusters of buildings which can allow for combat at closer ranges.

Soldier Camouflages

By default, PLA soldiers in multiplayer are equipped with Type 07 GI camouflage, but can unlock faction specific camouflages from Battlepacks, such as Urban Airborne or PLA Desert. Camouflages like Splinter and Fire Starter receive a unique scheme for the PLA when equipped.

Trivia

Battlefield 2

  • In Battlefield 2, The PLA uses the AK-47 rather than the Type 56 (which were chinese copies of the AK-47 but with different materials), its unknown if this was a developer oversight or misinformation about the state of the real PLA at the time.

Battlefield 4

  • In Battlefield 4, the patch on the PLA Assault's arm reads (安全员), which roughly translates to "security officer".
  • When PLA Assault equips the default Type 07 GI camouflages, players can see it on the long-sleeved uniform only through the first-person view. In third person however, the solider wears pure blue top. The third-person camouflages was cut after Beta version due to the lack of memory storage for consoles.
  • In Battlefield 4, the PLA Engineer is the only PLA member that wears full black uniform as default.
  • In Battlefield 4, the PLA Support wears an armored mask, though it is only cosmetic.
  • In Battlefield 4, a PLA soldier in singleplayer appears to be similar to the PLA Engineer, but possess the PLA Recon's body.
  • In Battlefield 4's multiplayer, the PLA appears as the opposing force of both the Russian Ground Forces and the United States Marine Corps. This may cause confusion, as the PLA is controlled by Admiral Chang, who fights with Russia against the intervening US forces.
  • The PLA are never attackers in rush mode, unless on a custom server where the PLA is engaging the PLA.
  • Assuming the USS Valkyrie (LHD-2) is destroyed and Admiral Chang is still alive, the RGF and the PRC engage in military conflict, thus creating the 3 engagements of Golmud Railway, Lancang Dam and Rogue Transmission, but truce to form the Pan-Asian Coalition in the late war.
