The Proximity Scan is a vehicle specialization that appears in Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 3

"External sensors detect and reveal enemy units on your minimap."

— Battlelog description

Proximity Scan is a specialization available to all vehicles. When it is equipped, enemy infantry in the immediate area are marked on the minimap.

Unlike TUGS, Proximity Scan does not ignore height and instead will detect enemy infantry within a 29m radius. Visualized, this would take the shape of a sphere.

Proximity Scan can help the player greatly in Ground Vehicles. It allows the player to spot enemies approaching their vehicle, so they can engage C4 carrying units before they are able to harm the vehicle or quickly retreat before they can plant their explosives. Also attacking a flag is much safer; the player can easily pick the enemies one by one, and help their team.

Air vehicles however receive much less benefit with it being practically useless on jets as the player flies at too great a speed and heighth to get much use out of it. Helicopters may receive slightly more use as a hovering helicopter can detect nearby hidden enemies and if forced to land can detect any players approaching their vehicle.

Standing still, going prone or crouching does not hide infantry from proximity scanners. This specialization also works for the gunner in a MBT or IFV. The CITV has a similar capacity.
