Maxim SMG

SMG 08/18 (without feed box and front grip)

The Schwarzlose submachine gun, also dubbed the SMG 08/18 and Maxim SMG, are the unofficial names for an experimental German submachine gun based on the MG 08/18 (the upgraded air-cooled version of MG 08/15), created by firearms designer Andreas Schwarzlose. The gun is fed from a multi-column en-bloc clip which held eight columns of ten 9mm Parabellum cartridges. The clip is inserted into the left side of the feeding box and pulled upwards into the chamber by a rack mechanism within the gun. When a column is emptied, the clip is pulled to the right, putting the second column in position. When all rounds are fired, the empty clip is pushed out through a slot on the right side of the feed box.

Battlefield 1[]

This item has a Codex entry: SMG 08/18
"The SMG 08/18 takes the mechanism of the MG08 machine gun, and scales it down to the 9mm parabellum round. It feeds from a unique 80 round clip."

— In-game description

The SMG 08/18 is a weapon introduced in the Battlefield 1: In the Name of the Tsar expansion for the Assault kit.

The SMG 08/18 is a powerful CQB weapon. Its combination of high damage per shot and high fire rate at 770 RPM makes it one of the most lethal weapons in close quarters. This, combined with a huge 80-round clip, makes the SMG 08/18 excel at room-clearing and getting multi-kills.

Despite its prowess in close quarters, the SMG 08/18 is not without its drawbacks. Its high first-shot multiplier, worst-in-class horizontal recoil, and high first-shot spread increase limit its effectiveness beyond close range. Similarly to the Hellriegel 1915, the SMG 08/18 has worse handling characteristics than other SMGs, such as less accurate hip-fire and a longer ADS time, which hinders its use as a reactionary weapon.

There are two variants for the SMG 08/18: Factory and Optical. Ultimately, what variant to choose will come down to personal preference.

"This basic SMG pattern regains accuracy more quickly due to lower weight."

— Variant weapon description

The SMG 08/18 Factory is the standard variant and offers iron sights. This variant has the following effects:

  • 50% faster spread recovery.
  • 100% faster recoil recovery.
  • The first shot recoil multiplier is reduced from 2.8x to 2.333x

This variant plays more like a traditional SMG, and the improved recovery in both spread and recoil will allow the user to take a breather quicker before engaging against more opponents.

Unique to the SMG 08/18 is the option to use AA sights instead of the standard iron sights.

"Equipped with a lens sight, this SMG pattern offers improved aimed accuracy."

— Variant weapon description

The SMG 08/18 Optical is the alternative variant and offers a optical sight. This variant has the following effects:

  • Minimum ADS spread is reduced by 25%.
  • First shot spread increase is reduced by 25%.
  • ADS time is slower.

The improved accuracy will allow this variant to be more accurate at further ranges.

Weapon Skins[]

  • The SMG 08/18 is one of only three weapons not used by the Support class that can have AA Sights equipped in lieu of the standard iron sights, the other being the Medic's Howell Automatic and Fedorov-Degtyarev rifles.
  • The SMG 08/18 received an increase in fire rate from 450 RPM to 770 RPM with the release of the Battlefield 1 February Patch, along with Battlefield 1: Apocalypse, representing a 70% increase in RPM.
  • A glitch occurs when firing the gun from 30 bullets to empty. Both the overheat and the reload animation play at the same time causing awkward hand animations.
