The SV-98 (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Model 1998) is a Russian bolt action sniper rifle developed and in production at IZHMASH JSC, a well known Russian weapons manufacturer, and is designed by Vladimir Stronskiy. The SV-98's design is based on a proven sporting rifle, and as a result is a very reliable and accurate weapon. It can be chambered for both the 7.62x54R and 7.62x51 NATO round from a plastic 10 round detachable box magazine. The SV-98 weighs 5.9kg empty and 7.8kg with an optical sight, ammunition and suppressor. The weapon has a total length of 1270mm with a barrel length of 650mm which gives it an effective range upwards of 1000 meters. It also features backup iron sights for in case of emergency, but its main sight is the PKS-07 7x magnification scope with a sighting range up to 1200 meters. The SV-98 has a scope mount that can accept foreign non-Russian made scopes for customization. The weapon also features a stock which allows for an adjustable buttplate and cheek pad for more comfortable aiming. A bipod is also available by default and can be folded into the front of the weapon to save space and a specialized suppressor designed to work with super-sonic ammunition can also be fitted to the muzzle to make it more silent. Because of its accuracy and reliability, it is in use by various Russian Law enforcement and Counter-terrorist units.

Battlefield: Bad Company

In singleplayer, all Russian snipers wield this weapon.

In multiplayer, the SV-98 is the default sniper rifle issued to the Russian Faction Recon kit. It, like all bolt action rifles in-game, it kills in a single headshot or a chest shot in close range and two shots to the body at long range. The weapon has a 6x scope attached by default. It also has some bullet travel time at long ranges. The M24 is its American equivalent and the GOL rifle is its MEC counterpart.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Only available in multiplayer, the SV98 Snaiperskaya is the 3rd sniper rifle issued to the Recon kit requiring 3900 points to unlock. One head shot will still kill a target from long range because of the 3.25x headshot damage multiplier, and a chest shot will one hit kill a person if they are at very short range, taking two shots to kill anywhere outside of that without a headshot. The SV98 has a large magazine of 10 rounds compared to the 5 round magazine of the other bolt-actions and it also has the fastest rate of fire out of any of the bolt action sniper rifles in the game.

The default scope uses a stacked chevron-style reticle with windage meters to the sides, instead of the conventional crosshairs of snipers such as the M24 or M95. Many players dislike this cluttered scope & prefer to use the M24 for this reason. The scope also has the largest field of vision out of the default sniper rifle scopes because it is much wider and this makes it much easier to spot and hit targets at longer ranges for excellent accuracy. The SV-98 can be fitted with several unlockable upgrades, such as a red dot sight, a 4x rifle scope, a 12x high-powered scope, or an additional spotting scope.

Like all the bolt-action sniper rifles, the SV98 is affected by bullet drop and has some bullet travel time. This means that to hit a target consistently the player needs to aim above the target at long range and lead their shots if the target is moving. However, attaching a red dot sight or 4x scope to the weapon will cause the bullet drop to disappear, although bullet travel time is still present. This was most likely done to balance the fact that it is much harder to compensate for bullet drop with a lower magnification scope, and because it will be used more for short ranges.

Trivia

  • In the beta version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the SV98 had a green finish. It was changed to a matte black finish in the retail release of the game.
  • The SV-98 is the only bolt action sniper rifle in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 without the bipod deployed when being used, although when on the ground, its bipod is deployed.
  • In Battlefield: Bad Company, it is impossible to find this weapon without being accompanied by the MP-443 Grach.
  • The stacked chevron reticle makes bullet drop much easier to compensate for in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 as the multiple chevrons allow a sniper to be able to decide which to use based on if their first shot had missed the target or they did not get a headshot. however, this is only useful for stationary targets, as mobile ones become more difficult as there is not much to use to judge where the shot will hit or if it will at all.
  • The SV-98, like the VSS, T-88 and SVU, has chevron sights in the default scope.
  • The SV-98 is more accurate when firing the 7.62x51 NATO battle rifle round, but due to it being a Russian weapon, it would commonly use the 7.62x54R round due to the available stockpiles of 7.62x54R ammo that Russia has.
