The '''SV-98''' (Snaiperskaya Vintovka Model 1998) is a Russian bolt action [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniper_rifle sniper rifle] developed and in production at IZHMASH JSC, a well known Russian weapons manufacturer, and is designed by Vladimir Stronskiy. The SV-98's design is based on a proven sporting rifle, and as a result is a very reliable and accurate weapon. It can be chambered for both the 7.62x54R and 7.62x51 NATO round from a plastic 10 round detachable box magazine. The weapon has a total length of 1270mm with a barrel length of 650mm which gives it an effective range upwards of 1000 meters. The weapon features backup iron sights for in case of emergency, but its main sights is the PKS-07 7x magnification scope. The SV-98 has a scope mount that can accept foreign non-Russian made scopes for customization. The weapon also features a stock which allows for an adjustable buttplate and cheek pad for more comfortable aiming. A bipod is also available and can be folded into the front of the weapon to save space and a specialized suppressor designed to work with super-sonic ammunition can also be fitted to the muzzle to make it more silent. Because of its accuracy and reliability, it is in use by various Russian Law enforcement and Counter-terrorist units.

In multiplayer, the SV-98 is the default sniper rifle issued to the Russian Faction Recon kit. It, like all bolt action rifles in-game, it kills in a single headshot or a chest shot in close range and two shots to the body at long range. The weapon has a 6x scope attached by default. It also has some bullet travel time at long ranges. The M24 is its American equivalent and the GOL rifle is its MEC counterpart.

The SV-98 is a bolt action sniper rifle in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. It is unlocked by earning 3900 points with the "Recon" kit. It is the least powerful bolt action sniper rifle in terms of damage, only doing 50 damage at extremely long ranges, but has a few advantages that balances it out. Despite the damage difference, one headshot will still kill a target from long range, and a chest shot will one hit kill a person if they are at very short range, taking two shots to kill anywhere outside of that without a headshot. The SV-98 has a large magazine of 10 rounds compared to the 5 round magazine of the other bolt actions and it also has the fastest rate of fire out of any of the bolt action sniper rifles in the game. The default scope uses a stacked chevron-style reticle with windage meters to the sides, instead of the conventional crosshairs of snipers such as the M24 or M95, and has a zoom magnification of 7.85x. This is the highest zoom out of any of the sniper rifles, and makes it much easier to spot and hit targets at longer ranges for excellent accuracy. The SV-98 can be fitted with several unlockable upgrades, such as a normal red dot sight, a 4x ACOG scope, a 12x high-powered scope, or an additional spotting scope. The weapon has considerable bullet drop and bullet travel times at long ranges, so the wielder needs to lead their shots as well as aim higher at the target to accurately hit them.

==Trivia==

*In the BETA of Bad Company 2, the SV98 had a green finish to it. It was since changed to a matte black finish.

*In Bad Company, it is impossible to find this weapon without being accompanied by the [[MP-443 Grach]] in Singleplayer.

*The stacked chevron reticle makes bullet drop much easier to compensate for in Bad Company 2 as the multiple chevrons allow a novice sniper to be able to decide which to use based on if their first shot had missed the target or they did not get a headshot. however, this is only useful for stationary targets, as mobile ones become more difficult as there is not much to use to judge where the shot will hit or if it will at all.
