Singleplayer

While the Battlefield series puts its focus on multiplayer, a number of games also feature a singleplayer component. New players may find it useful to learn the game through singleplayer before entering multiplayer.

As a general rule, games that use the Refractor engine have singleplayer levels reuse multiplayer maps with some modifications, while those with the Frostbite engine have Campaigns that form storylines for each game.

Battlefield 1943. Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free and Battlefield 2042 do not have singleplayer components.

Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam[]

Battlefield 1942 features two singleplayer modes: Campaign and Instant Battle. In the Campaign mode, the player is first required to choose a team (Axis or Allies) and then play through a set order of maps, on the same difficulty settings for each map. Two campaign progresses can be stored on one profile at the same time — one for each team. When the player wins all the maps in the campaign, an ending text will be shown, as well as some statistics marking the player's performance.

In Instant Battle, the player can choose any map from the list without prerequisites, including maps that were not available in the campaign, namely maps that were added after the game's initial release (where only Battle of Britain is available for the base game — others are unsupported), or those from expansion packs (all maps except for Raid on Agheila which was later added in a patch). The player will still need to choose the team to play as before entering the map and cannot change it throughout the game.

In both Campaign and Instant Battle, before starting a game, the player will be able to change the difficulty using three options (easy, normal, hard) or completely customize the following settings on a slider (doing so will display the difficulty as “custom”):

AI skills;
Player death ticket penalty;
Enemy vs friendly units ratio;
Performance: number of bots;
Performance: CPU time given to AI.

In Battlefield Vietnam, only Instant Battle remains, with similar customization options as Battlefield 1942, as well as the requirement to select the team before starting a map. All maps that were featured in the initial release are available in singleplayer, but not any maps that have been added to subsequent patches (namely Defense of Con Thien, Operation Cedar Falls, Saigon - 1968 and Fall of Saigon). All three maps in the World War II Mod are available in singleplayer.

In both Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam, the player can spawn into the battle as soon as the game starts, without having to wait for a countdown as in Co-op. However, like Co-op, if the player misses the first seconds of spawning, he will have to wait for another cycle. Additionally, unlike Co-op, the respawn time is not fixed and may vary greatly with each respawn. The rule behind this is yet unknown.

Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142[]

With Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 come maps in sizes designed for 16, 32 and 64 players. Singleplayer is limited to the 16-player size of each map.

Battlefield 2[]

Two maps — Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City are completely unsupported. Out of the maps added in later patches, only Road to Jalalabad is supported. The choice of difficulty level is limited to three options: easy, veteran and expert.

In the Special Forces expansion pack, there are significant differences between the singleplayer and multiplayer versions of the 16-player sized maps. Once again, two maps — namely The Iron Gator and Leviathan — are completely unsupported.

All three maps of each booster pack, Euro Force and Armored Fury are available. In each booster pack, two maps once again show a difference between the singleplayer and multiplayer versions in the 16-player-sized maps. The completely identical maps are Operation Smoke Screen in Euro Force, and Midnight Sun in Armored Fury.

Battlefield 2142[]

Battlefield 2142 allows the creation of a playlist for its singleplayer, much like multiplayer in previous games. Only five maps are available: Belgrade, Cerbere Landing, Fall of Berlin, Suez Canal and Verdun. These are again limited to the 16-player sizes. Sliders return for the adjustment of rounds per map and bot skill. There is also the Instant Action option, which loads a randomly selected map.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat[]

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is the first to feature a true campaign for its singleplayer component. In each level, the player is given a series of tasks to complete. Unique to Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is the ability to hot-swap, which puts the player into the perspective of another allied soldier to help complete all the tasks. In addition to the main missions, there are also challenges and Field Tasks.

This is the first game where the player's performance in singleplayer is rated against several factors and ranked globally.

Battlefield: Bad Company[]

Battlefield: Bad Company is the first game to feature Collectible Weapons in its campaign, which the player can pick up and use for the rest of the campaign.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2[]

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 features Supply Drops throughout the campaign, where the player can change his loadout or resupply ammo. Only weapons that the player has picked up earlier at any point can be found, as well as a few gadgets.

Battlefield 4[]

The singleplayer component of Battlefield 4 is the first to feature assignments that unlock weapons for use in both the rest of the campaign — by achieving a certain score in various missions, and for multiplayer — by completing a number of missions and unlocking different endings for the campaign. In addition, weapons and gadgets can be picked up through Weapon Crates and Gadget Crates for use in the remainder of the campaign.

Battlefield 1[]

This section contains spoilers for Battlefield 1.

The campaign of Battlefield 1 is divided into several War Stories — shorter mini-campaigns that each focus on one theater of the Great War. There are a total of six War Stories, including the prologue. Throughout the campaign, one can find a total of 66 collectibles known as Field Manuals, and a total of 53 challenges take the form of Codex Entries.

Completing all Codex Entries in each War Story, as well as the entire campaign, will award weapon skins for use in multiplayer.

Battlefield V[]

The campaign of Battlefield V, similarly to Battlefield 1, also consists of several War Stories. Trivia[]

On singleplayer maps in Frostbite-era games, except for the significant differences between the singleplayer and multiplayer versions of the same map in the additional content for Battlefield 2 as noted above, there may be small differences that do not affect gameplay, and are usually done to improve bot performance.
Battlefield Vietnam was planned to feature two additional singleplayer modes, called Tour of Duty, which would have functioned similarly to Campaign of Battlefield 1942, and a unique Challenge mode. However, in the map lists of both singleplayer (Instant Battle) and multiplayer, the maps are ordered according to their appearance in Tour of Duty.
