Smoke grenade

A smoke grenade in real life

A smoke grenade is a hand grenade specifically designed to release smoke when detonated rather than an explosion.

Grenades can emit plain gray/white smoke to screen positions from observation or targeting. Various colors can also be used as a signalling aid, visible from a fair distance away (especially from the air).

Battlefield Vietnam

In Battlefield Vietnam, the US and ARVN Scout classes come equipped with yellow smoke grenades. A smoke grenade is deployed like a grenade, but is non-lethal and creates a relatively large plume of smoke where it lands. It is of no use in Singleplayer or Co-op, as it is completely ignored by AI soldiers. In Multiplayer, it can offer a limited screening effect or can be used as a distraction. If a team is well coordinated, it can serve as a marker for air support.

Each Scout equipped with smoke grenades is issued a total of 3.

Battlefield 2

"The J4-M35 Smoke Grenade has helped many soldiers out of dire situations. Simply throw the grenade wait for the smoke to spread and change firing positions when the enemy can’t see you."

— In-game description

The Smoke Grenade is available to the Assault kit in Battlefield 2, functioning as the class' special ability alongside the grenade launchers used by the kit. It is thrown like a frag grenade (default Left-Mouse-Button for normal throw, default Right-Mouse-Button for a controlled distance throw), but releases a cloud of grey smoke a few seconds after landing instead of exploding. The smoke cloud obstructs vision through it but it does not last very long, staying active for about five seconds. This makes it less useful as concealment to hide in, and works best when used to block hostile lines of sight to move safely. The Assault only receives one Smoke Grenade, so unless a friendly Support or a Commander's Supply Crate is nearby, it should be used wisely.

In the Special Forces expansion, Smoke Grenades are replaced by Flashbangs. Likewise, Flashbangs will also be used if the player equips the F2000 in the base game.

Orders issued by squad leaders or the Commander also place a colored smoke grenade on the map that can only be seen by the squad. It will disappear when the player arrives at the objective or the order is completed. The smoke comes in three colors: yellow for movement orders, orange for attack orders, and purple for defense orders.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

In Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, the AN-M8 Smoke Grenade is issued to the Assault and Sniper kits. Similar to its effect in Battlefield 2, the smoke grenade can be thrown and "cooked" like a regular grenade, but emits a cloud of smoke instead of damaging players. The Assault still retains use of his M61 Grenades and underslung grenade launcher alongside the AN-M8, and can be a lethal combination when used in conjunction with each other. The Sniper's GPS also works well when used in tandem with the smoke grenade, allowing him and his teammates to see enemies in the smoke.

Battlefield 2142

The Assault kit in Battlefield 2142 has access to the SG-34 Smoke Grenade, which is used mainly as a visual obscurant. Its effect is rather weak and short-lived, and does not protect from AI-controlled sentry guns (or bots in singleplayer).

The Northern Strike expansion pack added the CM3-N Radar Grenade, which combined the smoke effect with a single scan from an embedded infantry sonar device.

Battlefield: Bad Company

While not a usable weapon, the smoke grenade appears as signals for the squad to regroup on to advance the story. It emits red smoke and is not thrown by any particular character. It can appear right close to the player as in many missions or appear very far from the player such as in missions like Acta Non Verba and Crossing Over right to the point where a vehicle is needed to get there.

Battlefield Play4Free

The smoke grenade in-game

The Smoke Grenade is an explosive featured in Battlefield Play4Free for the Assault kit. It can be obtained using points in the tier 2 equipment expertise Smoke Grenade training option.

When tossed, it will produce a large cloud of smoke after about four seconds. The cloud makes it impossible for anybody to spot any person within the smoke and will remain for 10 to 15 seconds. One may have a maximum of 5 smoke grenades at any one point, and it may be assigned to a specific numerical key.

Ranks

  1. Allows a single smoke grenade to be equipped and used.
  2. Increases the amount of smoke grenades carried to 2.
  3. Increases the amount of smoke grenades carried to 3.
  4. Increases the amount of smoke grenades carried to 4.
  5. Increases the amount of smoke grenades carried to 5.

Battlefield 3

The M18 Smoke Grenade was announced as an available weapon in Battlefield 3 on the GamesCom Fact Sheet, but is not used by the player as of the game's release. It is only seen in non-player-controlled situations, such as the seaborne assault on Kharg Island in multiplayer. On the Co-op mission The Eleventh Hour, smoke grenades are thrown by French Police to cover the GIGN soldiers who advance into the Stock Exchange (and are subsequently gunned down).

Players do have access to other forms of smoke concealment in multiplayer, such as 40mm Smoke for the M320, and 60mm Smoke for the M224 Mortar.

Battlefield 4

"Timed fuze hand thrown grenade that creates a blinding cloud of Smoke which also blocks spotting."

— Battlelog description

The M18 Smoke Grenade appears in Battlefield 4 as one of many grenade options for all kits, being the fourth grenade unlocked, after the M34 Incendiary and before the M84 Flashbang.

The M18's main purpose is to obscure areas or objectives, like Control points or M-COMs, allowing players to move around in the smoke undetected. Unlike past incarnations, the smoke created by the grenade now blocks any Spotted players inside or beyond it, making it more effective at concealing players. However, the smoke now also covers player's hands and weapons, making it more difficult to navigate or fight inside of it.

The M18 does not provide immediate cover however; the smoke takes a few moments to fully plume and cover an area. This is the main advantage of its two launcher counterparts, the 40mm Smoke grenade for the M320/GP30 and the 25mm Smoke airburst grenade for the XM25, compared to the grenade. These projectiles provide immediate smoke cover upon impact, (with the 25mm Smoke having the added benefit of allowing the smoke to airbust, covering sightlines for rooftops or high buildings) however, they cover a much smaller area and last for a shorter amount of time compared to the M18, with multiple M18 grenades providing much better concealment over the long term. The projectile grenades do have the advantage of doing direct impact damage, as the M18 is the only grenade available that is unable to kill in any circumstance (Hand Flares are capable of detonating damage explosives and being credited with a resulting kill).

Patch History

All grenades were rebalanced with Battlefield 4's Fall 2014 patch to discourage grenade spamming. Unlike the fragmentation grenades and the M34 Incendiary, the M18 and M84 Flashbang were not majorly nerfed, with their resupply times only being increased to 9 seconds from 5.

IRNV and FLIR scopes were originally able to see through smoke clouds, but this was removed with the Fall 2015 patch accompanying the Community Operations expansion.

Battlefield 1

"These grenades create a blinding cloud of smoke which also blocks spotting."

— In-game description

The Smoke Grenade is a grenade option in Battlefield 1. It functions similarly to its counterpart in Battlefield 4, but visually the smoke is emitted and thickens progressively unlike any previous game in the series. Smoke clouds are also slightly affected by other explosions (such as airburst mortars), although they aren't completely stopped.

Up to the grenade's maximum effective radius, it will break spotting, including any active spots. Within the smoke cloud, players will have difficulty seeing due to an additional blinding effect.
