The Republic of South Africa (also known as Mzansi or Azania) is a nation at the southern tip of Africa. This diverse and long-lived region was encountered in the 15th century by Europeans seeking a sea route to Asia. Until the creation of the Suez Canal in Egypt, the Cape of Good Hope in the southwest was a heavily frequented site for trade. Colonization by the Dutch and British, and independence thereof, eventually led to the current state shared between an African supermajority and a white minority. Though considered a "developing nation" with a legacy of poverty, it is nonetheless a significant economic power for the continent, and one of the founding members of the United Nations.
