The seal of the CIA, in which the Special Activities Division is a part of.

The Special Activities Division is an echelon of the United States Central Intelligence Agency that is responsible for black ops and covert missions carried out by highly trained teams of personnel. The division provides the President of the United States with an option for when military or diplomatic actions are unsuccessful or not viable. Many of the missions taken on include raids, sabotage, ambushes, and assassinations of high value targets or political leaders. As well as unconventional warfare, members of the Special Activities Division can and are used to gather intelligence within areas under enemy or unfriendly control.

Members of the Special Activities Division are chosen from every branch of the United States special operations forces. Their numbers are far less than many of the other special forces units, but their advanced training makes up for ther lack in numbers. The CIA's formal position for these individuals is "Paramilitary Operations Officers," and every member must have at least a bachelor's degree as they are still members of the CIA. These operatives are trained in every form of covert ops. They learn to become agile, adaptable, and most importantly, deniable. If they are compromised, the United States can and will deny any relations to them, making the U.S. in no way responsible for the operative's actions. The Special Activities Division is a faction featured in the singleplayer campaign and through Downloadable Content in the multiplayer section of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Braidwood

General Braidwood is the commander of the Special Activities Division (SPECACT) in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. He recruits Bravo-Two Charlie after the mission Cold War, where the squad recovered a "fake" compound of a superweapon that the Russians were building. He sends the squad to Bolivia to find Agent Aguire, while giving them a USB drive with information about the weapon - in which Sweetwater was going to take until Redford looked at him angrily and took it, most likely as he felt Sweetwater would lose it.

The squad is later tasked with finding Arkady Kirilenko after downing a French weather satellite and finding Aguire's intel on what is to be revealed as the Scalar Weapon, which led to Kirilenko as the project leader. Once Bravo-Two finds Kirilenko in southern Chile, Sweetwater discovers he had a shipping manifest for the Sangre Del Toro, a freighter that went down in 1949 off of the coast of Peru, but somehow wound up in the middle of the Atacama Desert like many other ships as seen in the mission. The squad heads to the desert in search of the compound needed for the Scalar Weapon and finds the ship and the compound after triangulating its position, along with documents detailing Operation Aurora where the men sent on the mission were not expected to survive as the US wanted to test the power of the scaler tech the Japanese invented.

After giving the compound to Aguire, he then betrays the squad, giving it to Kirilenko who then kills Aguire as he is no longer needed. After Flynn sacrifices himself to save the squad, Bravo-Two move through Medellín, Colombia in search of Kirilenko and the Scalar Weapon. They find that it is located on an An-225 after it was test-fired. They board the plane before it takes off and destroy the weapon and kill Kirilenko just in time while the plane was about to reach Texas. Despite all of their hard work, Bravo-Two is greeted by Braidwood after their landing in Texas where he regretfully tells them that they have to follow him as the Russians have decided to try to invade North America by coming in through Alaska.

Multiplayer

Main article: SPECACT

The Special Activities Division is not a playable faction as the US and RU are the only playable factions in multiplayer; but after purchasing the SPECACT DLC, players may use specially camouflaged uniforms for each team as well as specially camouflaged weapons to give them an alternate appearance on the battlefield. This is merely a cosmetic upgrade as the camouflaged weapons change depending on the environment (arctic camo in arctic maps, woodland camo in woodland/jungle maps, and desert camo in desert maps). However, the DLC does add four new weapons with no further unlock requirements: the M16A2 SA, the UMP-45 SA, the MG3 SA, and the M95 SA. All of the weapons added perform identically to their non-SA counterparts, with the only difference being their camouflage - except in the case of the M95 where the process is reversed as the original M95 had camouflage and the SA variant is in a black finish instead.

Trivia

  • The first-letter acronym of the Special Activities Division is SAD, which could be a reference to other games using acronyms for groups/agencies that aren't well known.
  • Although BAD (Company) is not currently known to be an acronym for their role as canon fodder, when it switchs to SAD makes sense since their new role in the Special Activities Division is more grim.
