Submerged is the fourth mission in the single player campaign of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, and is the first mission in the game where the player is sided with the People's Liberation Army.
Believing the deaths of the Chinese negotiators at the end of the last mission to have been caused by a NATO attack, Colonel Zhu sends his forces into the Mangystau Region to begin offensive measures, starting with the destruction of three Cruise Missile-armed NATO submarines docked at a base there.
Mission Briefing[]
Our enemy begins by shooting those who come in defence of peace, and now they attack our defensive cordon. Three fast attack submarines armed with cruise missiles have docked in the NATO anchorage. The enemy controls river traffic from strong defensive positions which you need to disable before locating the submarine pens and destroying the vessels. Proceed and bring honour to us all.
Synopsis[]
In this mission, the player is sided with the People's Liberation Army in Kazakhstan. The player is inserted via parachute with other Chinese forces. After the NATO outpost is taken the player has to defend the outpost from a NATO counter-attack. There are twenty-forty enemies attacking the base supported by two HMMWV's and a PBL. This part is very easy because the player has eight-ten Type 85 heavy machine guns to defend the base. The first bunker is also at this base and is defended by two Type 85's. The first objective is to destroy two bunkers controlling the river. The second objective is to destroy three NATO submarines. The submarine in the dry dock is heavily defended by ten-thirty NATO soldiers, five-ten Type 85 HMG's, one HMMWV near the gate on the left side entrance, and one HMMWV going up and down the highway. Once the first submarine is destroyed, friendly reinforcements drop in via parachute near the other submarines. A PBL will also be available to soften NATO defenses. There are also three-five HMMWV's that the player may destroy to make the mission progress faster. If the player chooses to enter the submarine base via the river, there is a PBL by one of the docks guarded by another enemy PBL. Sometimes the driver will crash into the rock in the middle of the river. The entrance of the submarine base via river is closely guarded by ten Type 85's, making swimming here suicide.

To achieve a full ten-star rating, the player will need to complete the following milestones by the end of the mission:
- Score: 150,000 points or more
- Time: Completion in under thirteen minutes
- Style/Weapon Use (amount of hot-swapping): Expert (about 10 hot-swaps)
- Accuracy: Greater than 50% shots hit
- Losses: Less than 12 soldiers on the player's team died
