Suppression is a gameplay element in Battlefield 3. Suppression can be achieved with most weapons excluding machine guns mounted on light vehicles. When a player is being shot at, even if receiving no damage, that player will eventually be suppressed.

While suppressed, a soldier's vision will blur and lose focus, he will call out for help, experience noticeably large increase of scope sway, hip fire spread will increase and he will no longer benefit from out-of-combat health regeneration, however a suppressed soldier will still regenerate health when a medical kit is nearby.

Suppression can be a useful tactic to reduce the combat effectiveness of enemies while flanking them. It can also be a useful point boost, for there is a 50 point suppression bonus should a team mate kill an opponent that the player is suppressing, even if the player was not attempting to suppress the enemy.

Suppression also comes in the form of Disability/Fire for vehicles and is exhibited as fire and smoke coming from the vehicle and a prominent beeping sound heard by those inside. A vehicle will be disabled and catch fire if its armor drops below a specified amount varying from vehicle to vehicle. The disabling affect will greatly impair a vehicles movement, ranging from slowed movement in land vehicles to a major loss of maneuverability and stability in air vehicles. The fire affect will cause a vehicle to bleed health at a steady pace unless repaired by a friendly engineer which will delay the bleeding effect for a few seconds.

To reverse the disable/fire affect the vehicle must be repaired back to full armor or they will continue to experience impaired movement and health bleed. The two effects can also be reversed if one has the extinguisher vehicle specialization allowing the vehicle to be repaired just over the disable/fire threshold. It is advised that one repairs a disabled vehicle as quick as possible due to the possibility a support equipped with C4 or flanking enemy vehicle is nearby.
