A suppressor, sound suppressor,

Suppressors attached to several weapons.

sound moderator, or silencer, is a device attached to or part of the barrel of a firearm which reduces the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon.

A suppressor is usually a metal cylinder with internal mechanisms to reduce the sound of firing by slowing the escaping propellant gas. Some of the older designs reduced muzzle velocity, however most of the modern ones will give a little additional velocity due to the freebore boost effect.

A suppressor still cannot supress the sonic boom of the ultrasonic rounds fired by most weapons. For this reason weapons using suppressors are used in conjuction with cold-loaded subsonic rounds, which travel slower and are more effected by bullet drop, in exchange for considerable stealth capabilities. This is accurately reflected in Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 1942

The suppressor was a default attachment for the Sten in Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII.

Battlefield 2

In Battlefield 2 suppressors were on the 3 available pistols: the US's/EU's 92FS, the MEC's MR-444 and the PLA'S QSZ-92 and were available in the Special Forces Kit and the Sniper Kit.

Battlefield: Bad Company

In Bad Company all submachine guns are attached with a suppressor. Two of the sniper rifles, the VSS and the SVU, have a suppressor.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

All of the Engineer-specific weapons are attached with a suppressor. Also, just as in Bad Company, the SVU and the VSS are both attached with a suppressor.

Battlefield 3

"A Sound Suppressor will prevent the player from showing on the minimap when shooting by reducing Sound and Flash. The Cold Loaded ammo used by Suppressed weapons travels slower and has a shorter range."

— Battlelog description

In Battlefield 3's multiplayer, the sound suppressor attachment can be attached to almost all of the firearms in-game, except for the shotguns, 93R and the two revolvers.[1] The AS VAL has an integrated suppressor, unique among BF3 weapons and uncommon among real-world firearms.

Cold-loaded (subsonic) ammunition is automatically used with any weapon with an attached suppressor. Using a suppressor will decrease bullet velocity and cause the rounds to drop faster, and will cause the rounds' initial damage to drop off sooner. Because of less propellant used in the subsonic ammunition and because of the added weight of the suppressor at the barrel's end, recoil is reduced slightly but also reduced is hip fire accuracy (as mentioned in loading screen tips).

Most sniper rifles have the same velocity as each other while using a suppressor, giving some commonality among the selection. Suppressors can also make mid-range aim more selective—for instance, the markings on the 8× rifle scope roughly correspond to 100m increments, while the markings on the PKS-07 graduate every 160m.

The suppressor is unlocked through kill progression for primary weapons, and suppressed versions of the G17, M9, MP-443, and the G18 by leveling up. The M1911 unlocked by being a Battlefield Veteran or an EA Gun Club member also has a suppressed variant.

Tactical Value

The decrease in sound and removal of muzzle flash can allow a player to use his weapon without fear of the sound of gunfire or the bright muzzle flash giving away his position at medium or long range, though at close range muzzle fire is still audible. As of the 1.04 patch, equipping the suppressor will prevent the player from showing on the minimap when he fires, allowing for a stealthier approach to flanking or firing on enemies. Using a suppressor on a Light Machine Gun can give players the advantage of providing heavy suppressive fire on enemies without himself becoming an obvious target. However, the loss of damage over range can be a problem for some players even with a light machine gun.

Trivia

  • When you first pick up a suppressed weapon in Battlefield: Bad Company, Haggard shows interest but soon says that "silencers are for girls" as he is more of a loud kind of guy than one to show for stealth.
  • In BF3 After Patch 1.04, the suppressor has the most beneficial features out of all of the weapon attachments. It reduces spread, does not let player to be 'spotted' on the minimap when he fires a weapon, reduces recoil and eliminates muzzle flash.
  • The AS Val is the only weapon in Battlefield 3 to be integrally suppressed, meaning the suppressor is equipped by default
