"In the twilight of WW2, the German Army descends into chaos. Under the command of a veteran officer, a lone Tiger tank crew begins to question the ideology that got them to this point."

The Last Tiger is the final singleplayer War Story featured in Battlefield V. The level has been released in December 5, 2018.[1]

The story follows a German Tiger tank crew in the final days of World War II on the Western Front, and how they begin to question the ideology that got them to this point.[2]

Plot

In North Africa, a Tiger Tank, number 237, opens fire on a British tank convoy, led by Peter Müller, driver Kertz, and loaders Schröder and Hartmann.

As the Allies broke through the German war machine at Normandy, Paris, Hurtgen, and the Ardennes by Christmas 1944, the Western Front begins to crumble. As the Allied offensive goes on, Tiger Tank 237 has been redeployed to support the defense at the Rhineland urban areas.

Mission 1

As they head for the city's cathedral, they see Germans branded as traitors due to cowardice. As the Allies break through the city, Tiger 237, nicknamed Stefan, callsign Anton-One, is ordered by command to support Wehrmacht infantry and tanks in a railyard, breaking Allied armor and infantry along the way. However, as they advance to the city center, artillery bombards German armor, prompting a change of orders to destroy the artillery and its defenses.

After the artillery had been destroyed, a counterattack attempts to entrap the Germans, this time with rocket barrage Calliope tanks, but to no avail. They then continue heading to the railyard, but Hartmann insists on going back to the bridge due to panic of death, but the crew disagree and carry on with the mission. At a train station, the crew are on their own fending off enemy armored columns before proceeding. However, as they proceed, red smoke appears from the air, signaling an aerial assault.

Mission 2

Allied air superiority targets the tank to be "busted". While they dodge all incoming fire, they take cover in a ruined building, but they cannot stay for long. They must send someone to scout the area for safety, and Schröder wants Hartmann, much to Kertz's disagreement. Peter sends Hartmann despite initial rejection to scout the area, but disappears in smoke. They are then surrounded by convoys of American armor and infantry, prompting them to escape.

Their orders now are to head to a forward base to destroy all strategic intelligence, while eliminating enemy armor and dealing with air attacks targeting them. However, an aerial attack was successful, disabling the tank. Peter goes out on his own to seize an AA gun to destroy the aircraft. Afterwards, he then returns to the repaired tank, and head for the forward base.

At the forward base, Peter goes out again and encounters American troops. After fighting or sneaking through, he then recovers the intelligence, and he returns to the tank. They then fall back to the cathedral.

Mission 3

As they return to the cathedral, the traitors were then hanged to death, including Hartmann. While Schröder reaffirms his belief from before, Peter knew that he did what he did, to follow orders. All Wehrmacht armor had been destroyed, leaving them alone with no support.

At the cathedral, with all hope for a victory lost, Peter goes out to find a working radio, since the radio was destroyed since the aerial attacks. Their orders now are to defend the cathedral at all costs, but doesn't know what all armor had been destroyed. As the Americans pour in, ordering the Germans to surrender, Schröder, still clinging to a loyal hope of victory, opens fire on the Americans, and a final showdown ensues within the ruins. Kertz insists on leaving now, but Schröder says otherwise.

With artillery zeroing in on them, they then fall back to the bridge, but it gets destroyed. As they fall into a crumbling bridge, their track has fallen off, trapping them. Kertz now questions why the bridge wasn't destroyed before, and he believes that they were lied upon and left to die. Peter says it's not the case, but Kertz leaves. However, Schröder, still on his patriotic mannerism, shoots Kertz in cold blood, branding him a traitor, much to Peter's sorrow. Schröder shot him because he still believes on strength in unity, despite all hope had been lost.

As the Americans reach the crew, Schröder defends himself by shooting the incoming Americans. Peter takes off his Iron Cross and surrenders, but Schröder refuses and shoots Peter for the same reasons as Hartmann and Kertz.

With the Allies entering the bridges on the Rhine river until Remagen, and the Soviets entering the Berlin border through the Vistula-Oder rivers in the spring of 1945, all hope for a German victory was lost. However, the Fuhrer's orders are to not surrender, leading to millions of deaths: civilian and military alike. It resulted in capitulation by May 1945, the death of Nazi German government officials, and the end of the war in Europe.
