Unlocks are a feature of Battlefield 2, allowing a player to obtain new weapons once he reaches a certain rank in BFHQ.
There are two unlockable weapons for each kit, commonly known as "Tier 1" and "Tier 2" respectively. To be eligible for a Tier 1 unlock, one needs to reach a certain rank in BFHQ. The player will then gain an unlock point and can use it to obtain any Tier 1 weapon regardless of other statistics (such as proficiency of the corresponding kit). The player can also choose to save the unlock point for later use and will be prompted again the next time a game finishes.
Unlocked weapons can be used in online servers, however, some servers disable unlocks. On the kit selection screen, the player can click a button to cycle through any unlocked weapons for the selected kit, replacing the faction-specific primary weapon.
If the player owns the Special Forces expansion pack and has already unlocked the Tier 1 weapon, the corresponding Tier 2 weapon will be unlocked automatically the next time the player logs in. Hence, Tier 2 unlocks are sometimes known as "Special Forces unlocks". However, when playing the Special Forces expansion pack, only Tier 1 unlocks can be used.
History of unlocks[]
- All Tier 1 unlockable weapons came with the earliest release of Battlefield 2.
- Five of the seven of Tier 2 weapons were added with the release of the Special Forces expansion pack, making some faction-specific weapons from Special Forces available for use in the base game. This left only the Sniper and Anti-Tank kits without Tier 2 unlocks.
- Tier 2 unlocks for the Sniper (L96A1) and Anti-Tank (P90) kits were added in patch 1.2.

Trivia[]
- An early screenshot of Battlefield 2 during work in progress showed the M82A1 as the Tier 1 Sniper unlock.
- In the files of Special Forces, in the directory
mods\xpack\Menu_client.zip\External\FlashMenu\images\objects\Weapons\Handheld
, there are unlock images for weapons and equipment that are unique to Special Forces:
- As these weapons are not unlockable, these images are never seen in the game.
